A poem for summer: "Two dogs" (M Bromberg)

"Two dogs"
(M Bromberg)

Shadow, whose shadow
advances before him on the garden path,
is dizzily content without
man's machinery or staff,
sundial or an hour's watch:
only a need for digging in good black earth --
and a bath.

His older sister, Roxie, plays
more slowly in the sun,
resting early in the trellis shade
with day barely begun.
By noon asleep, by after-noon
quietly inspecting her estates:
by sun's setting, ready for sleep again,
where the dream of the garden path awaits.
